Tours of Government House and its gardens are back – find out how you can book your spot.
Tours of Government House Victoria have returned, with community members invited to book their attendance on upcoming dates.
Both the Government House community group tours and public garden tours are operating again following the inauguration of the 30th Governor of Victoria.
During the recent period of vacancy between the 29th and 30th Governors of Victoria, necessary restoration and maintenance works were undertaken on parts of the House to ensure the protection of its heritage value.
With those works now complete, the free tours are once again operating, offering insights into the history of the House and the contemporary role of the Governor.
Garden Tours
The heritage garden at Government House covers 11 hectares and features magnificent lawns, commemorative and specimen trees, an orchard and kitchen garden.
According to the Victorian Heritage Council, it is one of the grandest surviving residential gardens in the State and an outstanding example of the landscape design of William Guilfoyle, who was curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Garden lovers will appreciate the diverse and unique landscapes and will have the opportunity to learn more about how it is cared for through the seasons.

Community Tours
School and community groups are also invited to take part in tours of the State Apartments at Government House, which includes the Ballroom, State Dining Room, State Drawing Room, kitchen garden and Conservatory. Community tours also include a visit to the orchard.
Including outbuildings, the Government House complex has over 200 rooms, with the main building complex over 3000 square meters.
The House is an iconic Melbourne landmark and remains an excellent example of nineteenth century architecture in immaculate condition.
In addition to learning about the history and architecture of Government House, tour groups also hear about the contemporary use of the house and role of the Governor in our constitutional democracy.
